Festival “Ohrid summer” is a musical event, organized more than 50 years ago. This is the main music festival, the date of its opening coincides with the official date of the beginning of the Macedonian “summer”.
The opening of the festival is attended by the entire Macedonian elite, it is opened by the President of Macedonia. The festival begins with a symbolic torch lighting, which, like the Olympic flame, should burn all the days of the celebration.
Leading musicians and conductors, orchestras of European and world art centers, artists with world names come to Ohrid city every year.
Musical events are held throughout the city: in the Amphitheater at the foot of the fortress “Samuilova tverdina”, on the shore of the Ohrid lake and in Plašník, in the medieval church of Hagia Sophia, or simply in the open air, near medieval buildings.
The amphitheater, one of the main historical places of Ohrid, has been hosting the festival since its foundation, a temporary stage is being built here, and from the upper rows the spectators can see a wonderful panorama of the city.
Each festival is accompanied by a multitude of events taking place in the city. During the years of the festival, it was visited by many world celebrities, for example, Ennio Morricone performed at the opening of the festival in 2009 with music for movies.
